The Meteorology of Tour #3
This tour scheduled during a very active portion of the storm season in Tornado Alley, when thermodynamics have become well-established. These parameters lead to explosive thunderstorm development capable of producing spectacular supercell thunderstorms and significant tornadoes.
Some noteworthy events intercepted by our staff during this period include:
Lamb County, TX/Tillman County, OK, May 29, 2001, tracked large supercell for record 9-hours. May 29, 2004 Harper - Sumner Co., Kansas (5 tornadoes). Elba, Colorado, May 30, 1996, multi-vortex tornado, up to 1 mile in diameter. Spencer, SD, May 30, 1998, large, deadly tornado tracked through town (F4). Des Moines, IA, May 30, 2000. Rolla, KS, May 31, 1996, tornado. Altus, OK, May 31, 1999, tornadoes beneath large, orange "mother ship" supercell.
Our goal is to intercept the best storm of the day anywhere on the Great Plains, from Texas to the Dakotas, and from the Rocky Mountains to the Mississippi River.
The map below depicts average annual significant tornado activity (F2 or greater), for late May/early June. SOURCE: NATIONAL SEVERE STORMS LABORATORY
