Storm Chasing Tour Company Satisfies Quest for Adventure and Learning
ARLINGTON, Texas - Each spring, Tempest Tours leads guests deep into America's Tornado Alley to discover the science and romance of storm chasing, and to pursue nature's most spectacular weather. The Tempest staff is comprised of some of the country's most experienced and successful storm chasers who are eager to share their knowledge of storms with others.
During May and June 2002, the team led guests to numerous tornadoes and supercell thunderstorms, the powerful storms responsible for producing the majority of significant tornadoes. Careful forecasting and logistical methods allowed the team to intercept the large Happy, Texas tornado on May 5 and the Kansas tornado outbreak on May 7. Additional tornadoes and supercells were intercepted through June in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota and Montana. "I have been chasing on various tours since 1996 and this has been the best," said Lisa Beal of Bolingbrook, Illinois, a guest in 2002. "Tempest Tours put our tour group on the best storms in Tornado Alley consistently. When severe storm or tornado warnings were issued, we were already on the warned storms. (They satisfied) my taste for adventure and learning," she said.
"Teaching guests about storm chasing is Tempest Tours' primary mission," said the company's president and founder, Martin Lisius. "It's very rewarding to see their faces light up when they discover something new, like how tornadoes form and what we look for when forecasting a target for the day. So many people barely understand tornadoes and what we do as storm chasers. Most of their limited knowledge comes from television and the movies. We open a whole new world of truth and wonder to them. After chasing with our team, our guests become storm fanatics, like us," he said.
Tempest Tours conducts storm chasing expeditions each May and June. Base cities include Oklahoma City and Denver. Schedule and base cities correspond with peak tornado activity in the US.
