SAN ANGELO: Zentner's Daughter, Steaks.
SHAMROCK: U-Drop-Inn Café, downtown. This Route 66 café, which until recently served up delicious burgers and chicken fried steak, is now closed and is up for sale. Subway, at truck stop south side of I-40, great place to fuel up and eat something other than a Big Mac. Becoming a favorite among chasers.
SNYDER: Rip Griffen's Truck Stop, Highway 84 at Highway 180. Convenient Burger King and Grandy's inside. Private phones at dining booths can be removed to access jack for data download. Also, amazingly clean restrooms. This is destined to become a chaser's hangout.
SWEETWATER: Allen's Family Style Meals, "chicken fried steak and vegetables for one set price."
THURBER: New York Hill Restaurant, Exit 367 and I-20 near Mingus. This popular restaurant between Abilene and Ft. Worth proclaims, "good food, good view, good service." Home-style cooking with a view of the now defunct brick and coal empire town of Thurber. The parking lot affords storm chasers with one of the only decent views of the horizon in the area.
TURKEY: Turkey Cafe, "homemade fried pies for bust days."
VEGA: Dairy Queen, easy on/off I-40.
VERNON: Herring Coffee Shop, Downtown Vernon at 1900 Pease Street in the historic Herring Bank Building. Martin Lisius says, "The Herring Coffee Shop is the quintessential, small-town coffee shop serving hearty breakfasts and lunch. Both the staff and regulars are friendly and full of talk. This is a must stop for chasers passing through." Taco Bell, US Hwy. 287. This new addition to Vernon is complete with gas pumps. A great stop for storm chasers!
WEST: The Czech Stop, on I-35 east access road. Gas up and fill up on kolaches. Storm chasers who bust while chasing in the West and Waco vicinity often make the mistake of stopping here when the are at their lowest level of depression. This leads to a mass binge of Kolaches, followed by a huge weight gain and more depression. Don't let it happen to you! Sulak's, Downtown West, east of I-35. Specials are locally-made Czech sausage, roast beef and pork chop dinners. Also delicious homemade pies.
WICHITA FALLS: Chili's, "great chicken tacos" across from Sikes Center Mall right in the path of the mile-wide 1979 tornado. Loves Travel Stop, US Highway 287, east side of town. In-store Taco Bell and tables with phones. Until recently, chasers could plug their laptop computers right into a data port located at the top of each phone. Now, you have to pull the phones off the wall to access the jack. Despite the new inconvenience, this has become a favorite stop for storm chasers!
